The Evening

A romantic dinner fifteen minutes from downtown Salt Lake City.

Part of the date is the drive. Head east on 800 South and keep going as it becomes Emigration Canyon Road, past Hogle Zoo and This Is The Place Heritage Park. The city drops away and the creek picks up beside the road. At the top of the drive is a 1960 building renovated into a modern mountain room, with the wood-fired ovens open to the dining room.

When the season allows, ask for the patios. The upper deck is built like a treehouse, level with the canyon walls, with mountain views that are best at sunset. The creekside lower patio is shaded and close enough to hear the water. In the colder months, the upstairs dining hall has a large skylight and plenty of natural light.

Start Here

An Old Fashioned in an oak-smoked glass.

The Emigration Old Fashioned ($19) is brown butter bourbon, tart cherry liqueur, vanilla syrup, oak-barrel aged bitters, rosemary, cinnamon and orange, poured into a glass filled with oak smoke at the bar. If one of you would rather something lighter, there's the Bee's Knees with gin, lemon and lavender-honey ($13). Or try the Nocturna, bourbon and scotch with amaro, fernet and sage, served with a smoked salt and honey rim ($17).

Wine comes by the glass ($13 to $17) or by the bottle.

The main event: a New York strip with bleu cheese butter ($48), king salmon in lemon beurre blanc ($43), or swordfish with persimmon salsa ($35). If you'd rather keep it easy, split a wood-fired Pear & Prosciutto pizza ($24). See the full dinner menu.

To finish: the apple tart with vanilla ice cream ($14), or the chocolate chip cookie skillet with vanilla ice cream ($10) to share.
